handheld gps and hunting HomeThis is a featured page

You guess it, there is not a perfect handheld GPS for deer hunting. You might have one in mind that you consider perfect, but probably not everyone has the same needs you do.

However, the good news is is that we can get pretty close to the perfect GPS for deer hunters, and you will find a few choices listed below. These particular units are considered the absolute best for deer hunting Highly rated by the hunting community, you'll find these units most utilized.

However, there are a lot factors to consider when choosing a good GPS. A lot depends on how you intend on using it. I can't really give you a solid answer as to which unit is best, you'll have to make up your own mind. I have hopefully reduced the amount of research you'll need to do based on the list below. I encourage you to take my list, google their names and determine for yourself what is best for you. GPS is growing quickly, it's getting cheaper and models are getting smaller. I encourage you to check back for updates to this article.

Important GPS features to consider for Deer Hunters:

- A good battery with a long life (A charge should last at least 15 to 23 hours)

- Memory for way points. The greater your memory storage the more waypoints you can store (Get at least a 14 meg unit)

-Light weight and portable, as if you didn't already know this.

- Make sure it has an easy to read screen (especially if you hunt at night)

- WAAS capability (allows for accuracy of up to 3 meters)

- Unit should be able to withstand a little water

Here is my deer hunting community top rated units.

- Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx

- Garmin Etrex Camo

- Magellan Explorist 200

- Garmin GPS 60

GPS Batteries and long life

One of the best features a handheld GPS can have is a long battery life. We all know how long a hunt can last, from a day or two to a week even. A long battery life for a GPS can save a lot of frustration while deer hunting. There is nothing worse then having to cut a hunt short because your GPS unit only has enough juice to get you back to camp. So be sure you add this feature to your list when deciding the best GPS for deer hunting.
Having enough memory to get back to camp

If you have been hunting for awhile, you probably have a hotspot or two that you like to frequent. There is nothing worse that racking up a bunch of hotspot waypoints in your unit only to find your maxxed out on memory and you need to start deleting old spots. So save yourself the trouble, when shopping for a GPS unit, make sure to include lots of memory in your criteria for the perfect unit.

Having a Light Weight and Portable GPS Unit

A heavy GPS unit is a huge burden to deer hunting. It's almost 2010 for crying outloud. There is no excuse for a clunker in the forest. I have seen some ridiculous handheld units way as much as 4 pounds. It would would be a hunting disaster having to lug around such a device. I would have to say that anything over a couple pounds is too heavy for deer hunting. So the obvious conclusion here is that your criteria should include a unit that stays below the 2 pound mark.

GPS Should Have WAAS Capability to be Good for Deer Hunting

Hopefully you are not one of the many GPS owners out there who is oblivious to WAAS and what it is. WAAS capability basically allows for a GPS unit's accuracy to be within 3 meters. When hunting you want to know exactly where you are and how far you have to go in case of an accident. So when deciding which GPS is the best for yourdeer hunting needs be sure to include WAAS capability as a must have feature.

Making sure your Unit outlives the rainshower

As most of you who hunt already know, hunting requires you to be outside most of the time, which of course means the weather is an important consideration. When you invest a couple hundred dollars in a piece of electronics that will be used outdoors, things like water can be a big bummer if things stop working. So be sure your deer hunting GPS is some what water resistant.
